We can’t go to tumblr these days, after the platform banned nude images. Twitter can be a bit hit or miss.

So it’s to Instagram that our wandering eyes stray, always on the look out for new beauties.

There is a lot of buzz right now about Mai Watanabe (わたなべ麻衣), who has gained a following on Instagram and has now made her gravure debut (promoting a digital photo book).

Netizens have discovered that a man recently arrested for threatening to kill the director of an anime may have appeared as an extra in an adult video.

In early June, the 21-year-old Fukuta Kishimoto was arrested by Tokyo police on suspicion of posting to an internet bulletin board that he would stab the director of Kemono Friends and “feed his meat to cannibals.” He also said he would set fire to the production office, chillingly echoing the horrific attack on the Kyoto Animation office in July 2019 that left 36 dead.

Kishimoto has admitted to the allegations that he made the online threats in April. Police are now investigating if he made related threats at other times.

Netizens, though, launched their own kind of inquiry and have published their findings: they suspect that Kishimoto also made a cameo in a porn production a few years ago starring Iroha Natsume (aka Sarasa Hara). The AV title is あなたに愛されたくて。夏目彩春 (part of a series) and the code is adn00084.

The Kishimoto lookalike does not get to have sex in the video that was produced by Attackers, instead playing a customer in an internet cafe that plays host to kinky escapades between Natsume and another man.

The jury is still out, officially speaking.

The man in the picture from the AV preview images certainly looks like Kishimoto, but he would have been probably too young to appear in a mainstream porn production even as an extra. It was first release digitally on December 31, 2015 and then on DVD in January 2016.

The nightlife scene, particularly the seedier side in areas like Kabukicho, has found itself demonized by the authorities and media as the most obvious source of infection clusters.

While we don’t doubt that intimate encounters with prostitutes or long sessions in small hostess club booths does increase the risk of infection, we are very suspicious of the narrative that the media is pushing.

Indeed, this week Tokyo announced 55 new infections — the most in a single day for several weeks — and blamed clusters at workplaces, so the situation is certainly more complex.

Hostesses and prostitutes, and their bosses, have seen their income plummet, if not completely disappear. Some hostesses have tried to invigorate the industry through new virtual or remote services.

Attempts to reassure potential customers may also backfire, as a sex parlor in Osaka found out when it advertised that its working girls were COVID-19 negative but had actually tested none. The managers were arrested.

Could the answer simply be masks? Would you like to spend a lot of money talking to a hostess whose face is covered by a mask — and perhaps there is a sheet of plastic between you or she is also wearing an eye shield? Hardly realistic.

But one kimono maker believes that its mask may be the solution.

According to a report from Kyodo News, the Yamagata-based company Otozuki has teamed up with a nightclub operator to produce “hostess-friendly face masks that make it easy to sip drinks and create an alluring atmosphere.”

Inspired by face veils worn by belly dancers, the masks feature three vertical strips of cloth that form a curtain covering the nose and mouth, with the strip in the center of double thickness.

Users of Face Veil are able to eat and drink without removing the covering just by raising the middle strip of cloth.

“They are less uncomfortable than (normal) face masks,” an official claimed, in a dubiously worded double negative. “They are becoming popular among women working in the nightlife industry.”

The masks come in various colors and materials, including lace, and are priced between ¥2,200 and ¥3,850, which is pretty hefty for a single mask.

Is this what the future of hostessing looks like?

Female politicians in Japan are much more interesting their male counterparts, especially their pre-politics careers. Not to be confused with the comedy-action movie starring Bruce Willis, Red, known as Shape of Red in English, came out earlier this year in Japan.

The R15-rated film stars Satoshi Tsumabuki and Kaho. Based on a novel by the award-winning writer Rio Shimamoto, Shape of Red is an erotic story with several appropriately sensual scenes involving the leads. We particularly like the toe-licking scene.

Infections continue to rise in Tokyo as we enter the second wave of the coronavirus in Japan, though numbers remain very modest compared to other countries.

Much of the blame and media attention has focused on hostess and host clubs. We have followed this as part of our monitoring of how the COVID-19 is affecting the adult industry in Japan, where sex workers, gravure idols, strippers, and hostesses are facing a sudden and serious decline in income.

There has also been some name-calling between Ginza and Kabukicho, as the hostess clubs in each district try to claim that they are not the ones responsible for the clusters that are appearing.

In fact, host clubs are proving just as risky as hostess clubs, if not more so. Of the 28 new COVID-19 cases in Yokohama on June 30, 26 infections were traced back to the same host club. Host clubs may actually be riskier because hosts sometimes live together in dorms and their customers are frequently hostesses: a vicious circle of corona.

So, what to do? Just let the industry fade away? There is clearly still demand and, whatever the mainstream media and politicians like to say in public, hostess and host clubs are a part of Japanese culture and society.

Some hostesses have responded by going online or wearing special masks.

Host clubs, too, are trying to engage proactively with the challenge of operating during the new normal of these COVID-19 times. Despite their unsavory reputation, the clubs are working with the Shinjuku government to conduct testing.

This involved the mayor of Shinjuku, Kenichi Yoshizumi, reaching out to a famous host club manager, Maki Tezuka, who met the politician and told him that people in the scene want to cooperate but a deep-rooted distrust of government prevents this.

Everyone was worried that their personal and business names would be made public if they cooperated with the official testing. The last thing they wanted was more demonization. After the mayor assured him that their privacy would be protected, Tezuka was able to persuade many other club managers to take part in the discussions.

“From the very beginning our thoughts aligned on infection prevention. I felt that if we could get rid of that sense of distrust, we could make all kinds of progress.”

A hotline was set up and testing among hosts rose, resulting in an inevitable jump in the numbers of identified virus infections, but the hope is to bring the infections under control rather than shame clubs.

Tezuka and Yoshizumi have now formed a coronavirus prevention liaison committee across Kabukicho, including hostess and hostess clubs, cabaret clubs, bars, and other businesses (presumably sex clubs), to expand testing and protect the industry. It is surely a sign of the strange times we are living through when such unlikely alliances are formed.

“There is now less distance between the government and Kabukicho, and this could become an opportunity to build a new relationship,” say Tezuka.

At a point when the sex industry in Japan is under economic and social pressure — demonized by politicians and the media for spreading the coronavirus, deserted by customers — comes a timely reminder of the “healing” and affective nature of sex work, and its curious status in society.

Recently reviewed in the Japan Times, Gabriele Koch’s book Healing Labor: Japanese Sex Work in the Gendered Economy (2020, Stanford University Press) argues that Japanese sex workers regard their work as necessary to the social and economic well-being of society.

The book is the result of nearly two years of ethnographic fieldwork among sex workers in Japan. “One surprise was how the sex industry is more or less accepted as socially necessary in Japan — and there is a long history to this,” the author told the Japan Times. “But despite this acceptance, sex workers still face a lot of stigma.”

Before he was prime minister, Shinzo Abe once told a TV audience that, “There are people in [the sex] industry who take pride in what they do, and the industry also includes ‘traditional’ Japanese occupations.”

The industry in Japan comprises some 22,000 legal businesses — and of course, many illicit ones, too.

Street solicitation has been criminalized since the early 2000s, and so the industry has shifted to a delivery, escort-based model, in addition to “soapland” sex parlors and other mainstays established after the Prostitution Prevention Law in 1956. One of the currently most popular offerings is deribari herusu (which literally translates to “delivery health”), where a sex worker is dispatched via a website to a private home or hotel.

Perhaps the most striking — and controversial — part of the book is to learn that sex workers connect their jobs to feminine care and male healing (iyashi), which they believe reduce sex crimes and serve to benefit the economy. Based on a pragmatist view of men’s sexual needs and a work culture known to push workers to utter exhaustion, sexual release supposedly helps to replenish male productivity. “Now I’m ready to face anything again,” many customers are quoted as saying.

Koch’s book suggests that the female sex workers are forced into the industry by the lack of other attractive economic choices in a sexist society. In other words, sex work, and its ambivalent toleration by society, is a consequence of Japan’s culture and economy that frequently puts women at a disadvantage.

However, she also argues against an interpretation of the women as only victims, since her interviewees’ own take on their circumstances was more proactive. They are, in a way, making the most of the lucrative opportunities offered by the industry.

While we tend to concern ourselves chiefly on these digital pages with the goings-on of the Japanese female, we are not blind to the charms and amusements of her male counterpart.

Indeed, we take delight in a real gem like this.

Recently discovered and shared in a series of photos on Twitter by Joshua Hunt, the now-defunct street fashion magazine Relax did a spread on “men who love their underwear” inside an issue in 1997.

The article title translates roughly as: “Street Corner Underwear Attack in Harajuku: Guys So Proud of Their Underwear That They Can Show People.”

Hostess clubs are really suffering in the new normal that is living with the coronavirus.

People are understandably wary of spending prolonged periods inside small bars and clubs running up a hefty drinks tab — even when the company of beautiful women is included. Given the proximity required for the experience, face masks — even ones specifically designed for hostesses — are not likely to reassure moneyed clients.

Host clubs have particularly faced media scrutiny as the cause of several coronavirus infection clusters, though are now working with the Shinjuku government to increase testing.

With hostess clubs, especially the most prestigious and high-end ones in the district of Ginza, there is a small matter of pride to overcome. These women see themselves as modern-day geisha but income at the clubs has completely collapsed while their eye-watering rents still have to be paid if they want to remain in business. A “save Ginza” crowdfunding scheme to sell advance tickets to Ginza restaurants has failed to catch on. The campaign was launched by a team that includes Aki Shirasaka, a famous hostess club mama. When sharing information on the project on Twitter, Mulboyne insightfully noted that:

Very little about the Ginza hostess club business plan makes sense in a COVID-19 world. Clubs have a variety of clientele, depending on the mamasan’s network of contacts. Some cater a lot to celebrities. Shirasaka seems to have had a large number of businessmen.
