The famed Tobita Shinchi red light district in Osaka will close down during the upcoming Group of 20 summit in late June, according to media reports

Tobita Shinchi is a rare example of an old-style red light district (yukaku) in Japan, similar to how Yoshiwara used to be in Tokyo, featuring rows of licensed establishments in which young ladies sit in open doorways waiting for patrons.

This time it’s not the authorities actually doing the closing; it’s kind of a case of self-censorship. Apparently the Tobita Shinchi association itself has agreed to “restrain” its activities during the summit from June 28th to June 29th.

The association of 159 members said it would close all the businesses to “avoid causing disruption in the area.”

It is the first time the quarter has closed like this in 30 years. The last time was for the funeral of Emperor Hirohito died in 1989.

The whole move is ridiculous, in our honest opinions. It is highly unlikely that the dignitaries or world press would wonder into Tobita Shinchi, which is not in the center of Osaka — and even if they did, so what? It hardly matters in the grand scheme of things, not least the terrible wars and violence that the G20 nations wage around the world. Moreover, just because you temporarily close down Tobita Shinchi, it doesn’t mean there is suddenly and magically no prostitution in Osaka. Quite the contrary! Namba and other districts are filled with places where you can pay for sex — just not as flagrantly or traditionally as Tobita Shinchi.

Another week, another arrest for drug charges in the Japanese entertainment world. And another career in ruins.

Officers raided the home they shared in Tokyo and found evidence of possession of marijuana, which is banned in Japan.

Komine has already retired from acting, it seems, and established herself as the head of an entertainment agency (jimusho). Since she is working “backstage,” so to speak, she may be able to salvage some kind of career after she is released, though we presume Taguchi’s acting roles and, more importantly, any possibility of lucrative advertising appearance fees, are gone the way of the dodo.

The latest porn release (HND00655) by former NMB48 idol Miko Matsuda (originally known as Risako Okada) is an apparently shameless parody of the Maho Yamaguchi incident.

Sometimes this gets exposed. The porn star Yuria Satomi found herself in trouble with the tax bureau due to ¥200 million in undeclared income over several years, apparently accrued from “boyfriends” who were paying her. The gravure idol Shoko Takasaki was caught receiving money for a date that ended with a trip to a love hotel. It was only shocking because it got into the press. She rode the wave of the scandal all the way to become Shoko Takahashi, now one of the top adult video stars in Japan.

A Japanese TV show once shared some industry estimates for how much a dinner date costs with certain idols.

The names were only represented by initials (in Japanese name order), but these in combination with the descriptions are enough to give the game away.

The prices seem a little low for, say, Watanabe, considering what a big (no pun) star she is, but maybe paying for a date with her is a little different to paying her to endorse your brand in an advertising campaign. Besides, perhaps the fee is lower because the cost of the food consumed will be disproportionately higher when she’s ordering!
