Like an “alien” version of gyaru, ganguro or yamanba trends, women dress in extremely garish and skimpy outfits while their hair is dyed and bodies painted in outlandish colors: red, turquoise, yellow, pink, purple… you name it! (For obvious reasons, though, the “black” skin models might be offensive to some.)

For the curious, Kotaku has helpfully pinpointed some of the influences on ishoku-hada, including Avatar, Phantasy Star Online 2, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and Mystique. (It also reminds that prim and proper beauty Reiko Kikukawa painted her skin blue to advertise the Blu-ray release of Avatar a few years ago. Ah, good times in Tsutaya gazing at that poster.)

A handful of practitioners got noticed and it has started to spread online thanks to the Japanese editions of BuzzFeed and Huffington Post, though the number of people actually doing this is tiny.

What many have not noticed is that the main model behind this “trend”, miyako, is none other than popular (and very busty) gravure idol Miyako Akane, who is now also a porn star performing under the name Ema Yumekawa.

This video by i-D features interviews with young people who identity as genderless.

The makers say that this “hypnotic youth movement are [sic] rejecting ideas of fashion defining sexuality” and call it “Tokyo’s most boundary-pushing scene”. The interviews are with four people — Yutaro, Muyua, Yoshiaki, and Satsuki Nakayama (pictured below) — who all have quite large followings on social media.

Genderless identity has particularly risen to the fore in the Japanese media recently with the popularity of the model and television personality Ryucheru.

“When I first wore a skirt, my dad was shocked,” says Yutaro. Muyua, though, notes that people have been “genderless” — wearing the clothes of their supposed opposite gender — from even before the term existed, but new awareness of the concept has helped the trend grow.

The video, however, keeps the debate largely focused on clothing and makeup, but being genderless or agender is not just about cross-dressing: it covers a gamut of different identities, including gender-neutral or having no known gender, or even just a conscious will not to label their gender.

According to i-D, these people are almost “just” making a fashion or style choice. “Fashion and makeup can change you. They changed me,” as one of the interviewees says. But surely there is a lot more to the topic than just this?

We have long explored Japan’s fluid attitude towards gender and sexuality, which often goes way beyond clear-cut definitions of gay and LGBT.

From the costume artist Pyuupiru to the development of genderless clothing, many people in Japan are now questioning the binary norms of fashion.

Matsuko Deluxe is gay and dresses in drag on television, but apparently identifies as male. On the other hand, the otoko no ko cross-dressing subculture is popular now but is more like cosplay than a “gay” trend.

The devil is not, then, in the details of the labels but in the fluidity.

Once again we have been trawling some of Japan’s postwar history for insights about the sexual development of the nation. Here are some awesome vintage images of classic love hotels.

Fans of love hotels and this blog will immediately spot that this one is the Meguro Emperor, a pioneering love hotel from the 1970s that has since re-opened.

The other two are, apparently, the Ichinomiya London and Olympia hotels.

It was around this time that love hotels started to become very elaborate, adding castle-style “battlements” and turrets. The results are bizarre, lurid and wacky, especially when placed in contrast to more ordinary aspects of the urban landscape such as a motor highway.

Every few months along comes another one: a sensationalist English-language news wire article about Japanese sex dolls that appears everywhere, eager for clicks and comments.

This time it’s an article with the very sensitively headline “Silicone Sally: Japanese men find true love with sex dolls”. It comes courtesy of AFP, about physiotherapist Masayuki Ozaki turning to a silicone sex doll, Mayu, when romance in his marriage dried up.

Lonely guy buys sex doll. Hardly news. Goodness knows how AFP found this story or if it’s even true. We are naturally somewhat suspicious of someone who would agree to be included and even photographed half-naked with his doll.

We guess what makes the story unusual this time is how Ozaki lives openly with Mayu under the same roof as his wife and teenage daughter in Tokyo.

“After my wife gave birth we stopped having sex and I felt a deep sense of loneliness,” the 45-year-old physiotherapist told AFP in an interview.

“But the moment I saw Mayu in the showroom, it was love at first sight,” blushed Ozaki, who takes his doll on dates in a wheelchair and dresses her in wigs, sexy clothes and jewelry.

“My wife was furious when I first brought Mayu home. These days she puts up with it, reluctantly,” he added. “When my daughter realised it wasn’t a giant Barbie doll, she freaked out and said it was gross — but now she’s old enough to share Mayu’s clothes.”

Ozaki is one of an increasing number of Japanese men turning to rubber romance in a country that’s lost its mojo.

So the true story here is about a loveless marriage — neatly feeding into another trope that the Western media is obsessed with: sexless Japan.

AFP even made a video showing Ozaki and Mayu out on a date.

Of course, many readers will have already guessed that Mayu is a doll from the amazing lineup of Orient Industry, which, the article says, sells around 2,000 dolls per year.

The article then rather casually links the falling birthrate in Japan with a “growing” number of “herbivore” men not interested in sex or women. But how many is “growing”? Is this really a problem or mainly a media construct? 2,000 dolls is an interesting niche market, but it hardly spells the end of the entire population.

We welcome articles about sex dolls in Japan, especially when they provide insights into the users and owners. But we want them to be sincere. We think that Orient Industry dolls are incredible in their own right and should not be indirectly blamed for any wider social problems.

There is a host of other problems feeding into the birthrate issue, not least declining incomes and economic instability as well as a lack of infrastructure for young parents.

These kinds of articles and the accompanying photos convince the world that Japan is a nation of weird men walking around Tokyo with their sex dolls.

Such men exist but so does so much here. That’s why we love writing about adult themes, because there is such a rich canvas. But it’s not this black-and-white tale of lonely middle-aged men and herbivores. We think such a sniggering interpretation does a disservice to the men, the doll designers and the Japanese people in general.

At the least, the article needs a neutral voice from a scholar or pundit toning down the clickbait.

The article is particularly disingenuous when it talks about Yoshitaka Hyodo like he is just another regular sex doll owner with a “military sex doll fetish”. As we have written about before, Hyodo is much more than that: he is a collector who has converted his home into a private museum. Hardly a typical example! None of this important context is mentioned.

We recently read a report in the Asahi Shimbun about the adult video scouts who operate on the streets of Tokyo, searching for the next porn talent to come walking by. The result is an industry with an almost literally countless number of women working in it as performers at various levels.

The article was an interview with a certain former scout who started off in the 1990s, having met a porn actress at a party and hearing that you could earn ¥1 million a month.

The job of the scout is to spot a potential woman and then befriend her and convince her to come along to the AV production or talent office for an interview. This is a murky world and coercion is common — in which the scouts also play their part.

Once the woman you scouted is signed up, you get a “finder’s fee” every time she appears in a porn release. As such, it can be a lucrative job.

In the 1990s, the scout was making ¥3 million a month. In the 2010s, he was introducing over 40 women a month to the production company, of which some 15 would take the plunge into AV.

To achieve his results, he walked the streets all over the city, especially the major districts.

Since 2005, however, a Tokyo ordinance has banned AV scouts from operating on the streets. For this reason, he had to use a ruse at first by claiming to be scouting for other work, such as modeling.

So as not to put anyone off, he wouldn’t himself say it’s for AV. Instead, he would get the women to ask him if the production company is involved in porn, and then he could reel them in by saying they were opportunities to do all kinds of things, including porn, if contracted women were interested. He was always sure to have magazines for gravure models and movie extras ready to show them examples of the range of possible jobs.

This means he was safe from accusations of fraud and outright deception. However, when it comes to the contract, the word “AV” is never clearly written, and this is when it becomes very ambiguous. Instead, a clause will say something like “adult content”.

He was sometimes called to shoots to comfort and persuade reluctant women. Needless to say, he became very skilled at saying the right things to get them to relent.

Now retired, the scout’s handiwork is visible in numerous porn releases from the past 20 years.

Now comes the “boy” band 8P (8-Piece), featuring eight male voice actors who are trying to transition into a music career. And one of the ways they are promoting themselves is by cross-dressing.

We’re certainly curious to see if this gimmick can actually help promote the career of the band. There’s no indication that this will become a permanent part of the band’s identity or even if they will perform regularly as otoko no ko cross-dressers.

Nonetheless, the initial results have gone viral, though we suspect this kind of approach is popular mostly with Boys’ Love fans.
