A photography show featuring work by yuria has got our blood stirring.

“Aimai futomomo shashinkan” (Ambiguous Thighs Photo Studio) focuses (literally) on girls’ thighs — lots of them. The exhibits are based on five years’ worth of materials!

Of course, this is basically zettai ryouiki (forbidden zone) in a more artistic setting.

The show runs from July 3rd to July 12th at Todays Gallery Studio in Asakusa. Entry costs ¥500 but for that you get around 200 exhibits of thighs.

If you fancy getting your thigh photographed in this style, during the exhibition yuria will be on hand to do the honors on certain days.

Triumph, Japan’s wackiest bra brand, has released its 15th Lingerie White Paper — a report on the underwear trends of Japanese women. Triumph has been doing this survey since 2000 and releases it to the press in May every year.

And this year’s report contains some good news for any who have bemoaned the chopping-board poverty of Japanese girls’ breasts.

Based on its own product sales from 2014, it has organized the results per Japanese women’s breast size:

A cup – 5.3%
B cup – 20.5%
C cup – 26.3%
D cup – 24.1%
E cup – 16.2%
F cup – 6%

In 2000, when the survey started, A and B cup sales combined were 45.6%. Now at 25.8%, they have dropped by almost half! And in the 1980′s, the A cup occupied around 60% of the sales! In this sense, Japanese women have really changed in the past 30 years.

Importantly, women also want to have bigger busts now. Less than 20% of women with A or B cup busts answered that their current size was ideal. On the contrary, those who wanted to have C cup or over were 15-30%, while the most satisfied women were those in the D cup range — 37.1% of them said they were pleased with their bust size.

We should first keep in mind that Japanese bra cup sizes don’t correspond exactly to those in other countries.

That being said…

Both A and B cup sales have dropped, while the F cup sales have increased by almost the same amount — indicating that the middle range is fairly steady but we are seeing less tiny busts and more big busts. In fact, the increase in F cup sales is slightly more than the A cup and B cup drop, meaning they are outpacing them in growth.

Who knows what the future holds?! What could Japanese girls be like in 10 years’ time?!

Before we celebrate by going out on the prowl for all these new F cup girls, we should remember that the birthrate is declining, which means lower numbers of teenagers in Japan. This might account for the fall in A cup sales.

Around 40% of Japanese singles do not want romantic partner. That’s according to a dubious government survey, published this week and picked up by the media.

It refers to single Japanese people in their twenties and thirties.

Apparently they find relationships “bothersome”.

The survey, conducted by the Cabinet Office on the Internet and by mail between last December and January, covered 7,000 people aged 20 to 39. Valid responses were received from 37.8 percent.

Of the valid respondents, 37.6 percent said they don’t want a romantic partner, while 60.8 percent voiced interest in such a relationship.

The figures were reported in an annual government white paper discussing measures to combat the low birthrate.

Of the total, 28.8 percent said they are unmarried and are not in romantic relationships. Of them, 39.1 percent of women and 36.2 percent of men said they do not want a romantic partner.

What did make sense was that low-income earners are less inclined to want to pursue romance. After all, relationships cost money in dates, gifts and so on.

The most popular reason given for why they were disinterested in relationshops, 46.2% said it was because relationships were “bothersome”. This was the most popular reason.

This was followed by 45.1 percent who said they wanted to prioritize hobbies and 32.9 percent who prioritized their work and studies ahead of romantic relationships.

The white paper also pointed out that the proportion of people who have never married by the age of 50 is increasing.

To deal with the low birthrate, the government has vowed to provide support for all stages of individuals lives, ranging from marriage, pregnancy and delivery to child rearing, the white paper said.

By coincidence, the Financial Times recently spoke to otaku art uber-proprietor Takashi Murakami and tried to suggest to the business giant that Japan’s sexlessness was due to people like him pushing otaku tropes on unsuspecting men.

Today, otaku culture is wildly popular with teenagers around the world, he says with a hint of pride. Is that such a good thing, I ask? Aren’t its images — sometimes cute and infantile, sometimes suffused with graphic sex and violence — a reflection of the stunted Japanese society, stuck in adolescence, that he has often bemoaned? And wouldn’t Japanese men be better off leaving the security of their bedrooms and dealing with real issues, including real women? If nothing else, I suggest, treating women as equal partners, rather than objects of out-of-reach fantasy, might help improve the country’s famously low fertility rate.

Naturally, Murakami responds to this with a flat-out denial.

Otaku culture… has the virtue of being authentically Japanese, not some imitation of revered western culture. And riajuu people, he adds, referring to “real” people with fulfilling lives in the real world, are looked down on by otaku. “We are becoming sexless because we have evolved,” he says approvingly, when I ask him why Japanese spend so much time perusing images of sex and so little — if surveys are to be believed — actually having it.

So it’s evolution, then. Nothing to worry about.

Well, Murakami would say that: he’s made a fortune from this shtick.

Whether it’s riajuu or otaku — either way, if government surveys are to be believed a worrying 40% of them aren’t interested in relationships!

“Gender, Genitor, Genitalia – Rokudenashiko Tribute” is an exhibition planned for Hong Kong as a tribute to the struggle of “vagina artist” Rokudenashiko (Megumi Igarashi).

Megumi Igarashi, who goes by the artist name of Rokudenashiko, calls her art “deko-man” (vagina decoration). She has been arrested for obscenity. Her crime was such projects as making a boat based on a mold of her genitalia. (Remember, this is all happening in Japan, where mythology says the gods created the islands through sex and fertility festivals continue to happen.)

The exhibitors are currently running an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for the project. They want $13,525 and have so far got around 20% of their goal, with over a month still to go (it’s a “flexible” campaign so they will still collect even if they don’t make their entire target).

Firstly, we think it is important to let people know what is happening in Japan. Not only with Rokudenshiko, but also those LGBT artists in Japan who have been warned or arrested under the Obscenity Laws in the past three years. People in Hong Kong are aware of freedom of artistic expression and we believe that it is significant to realize this project in Hong Kong, a hub in Asia and also a location that is highly aware of, even threatened by, authoritarian politics.

Secondly, relating to Rokudenashiko’s incident, we will try to examine feminism in art and digital obscenity in this exhibition, within the context of the Hong Kong and Japanese experience. Through the works of art in this exhibition, and information provided about the Rokudenashiko case, we will be rethinking issues around feminism and genitalia in a cultural and political context.

The exhibition is planned for August 29th to September 20th at Woofer Ten in Kowloon.

Participating artists include Makoto Aida, Sputniko!, and of course, Rokudenashiko (Megumi Igarashi).

The organizers are presenting the exhibition as “feminist” — a rare thing in Asian art.

Feminist art is usually a rare category of art in Asia, and not many exhibitions on the theme have taken place in the past. We would like to align the works within a feminist context in Hong Kong and Japan, and consider whether the artists think they are feminists or not. Feminism is not a unified ideology, and several groups have different ideas.

The exhibition includes different concepts of feminism, from different points of view; from “Lipstick Feminism” (Robot, Sputniko!) to the more classical ideal of liberating woman from oppression (Ryoko Suzuki, Lam Hoi Sin, Rokudenashiko).

Gender issues in the digital world are an emerging issue. Some of the works deal with sexual desire and body politics in internet culture (Suzuki, Lam, Chan Mei Tung), which relates to our theme as Rokudenashiko was arrested for distributing her 3D vagina data.

Campaign perks include Makoto Aida tote bag with an “obscene” drawing on it. Nice!

Photographer and designer Kuchikaseya Moira is holding her first solo exhibition at Jimbocho Gallery until July 12th, featuring sexy self-portraits and more.

Kuchikaseya Moira, whose name means “Gagsmith Moira”, is known for her “nerd fetish” erotic cosplay self-portraits. She looks very nice in a swimsuit, especially wearing a mouth gag as well.

An elementary school teacher working at a municipal school in Kobe City has been arrested under the child prostitution and child pornography law. Kazuho Sano (23) is accused of filming children at his school with his smartphone in order to “make child porn”.

Sano was a temporary teacher at Kobe City Minato Elementary School. He was hired in April. He is accused of making videos with his phone camera featuring the naked bodies of children in a classroom at the Kobe school on June 25th.

He is reported to admit the offense.

He allegedly filmed kids playing after school and made several videos. Another employee at the school became suspicious of Sano on July 3rd and checked the videos.

“I found the kids playing interesting and wanted to film them,” Sano apparently offered as his excuse.

Whether or not he deliberately wanted to film their naked bodies is unknown. The issue here is that he filmed the children’s “lower halves” and they were unclothed. Whether he filmed boys or girls is not reported.

It does raise questions: can you now film kids just playing in a park or public place? Will you be accused of ulterior motives if you do?

The child pornography law was controversially revised in 2014 to make possession illegal, though manga, anime and computer graphics were excluded from the wording… for now.

So be careful what you film on your phone. A video of your own child taking a bath? Is that now classified as “kiddie porn” in Japan?

The service costs ¥5,000 ($41) for 30 minutes. Quite steep, yes — but it is time spent with Japan’s most provocative artist today!

Japanese actress gets naked in the film Tokyo Refugees (aka Refugee in Tokyo).

Born in 1986, Otsuka (sometimes credited as “Ohtsuka”) appears in three nude scenes in the 2014 drama.

Mark Schilling in The Japan Times quite liked the film.

Based on a novel by Tetsuzo Fukuzawa, “Refugee in Tokyo” is unlike the many local films with goofy slacker heroes and a black comic tone. Instead it is a straight-ahead drama that tries to lift the lid on hidden corners of Japanese society, from elderly homeless guys sleeping in parks to the denizens of Tokyo’s mizushobai (“water world,” or sex industry) of love-for-sale clubs, cabarets and massage parlors.

Otsuka plays “an emotionally needy older woman”.

While she appears flat-chested in her Gravure shoots, Chihiro makes plain in the movie that she actually has a very fine chest!
