Yes, finally! Japan is getting its first ever shunga exhibition, opening in Tokyo this September.

While legally you can’t show genitalia in films, porn or even art (as Megumi Igarashi has found out to her misfortune), Japan has an immensely rich history of sexually explicit art and erotica.

The important thing to remember about shunga (literally “spring paintings”) is that they were created by some of the most famous and popular woodblock print artists, including Hokusai and Utamaro. Sure, they were more niche than the most iconic prints — but they were still part of the mainstream.

This all got forgotten when Japan tried to “modernize” in a kind of strange copy of the western model.

The result? There has never been a large-scale shunga exhibition in Japan or porn is pixellated, as is full-frontal nudity in regular movies. Go figure.

Shunga have also faced censorship in the past, with the key penetration or genitalia imagery blocked out from view. However, many books have been published in recent years with the prints in their full glory, so perhaps this is a sign of progress.

We’ve seen also shunga on public display in Japan before but usually curtained off discreetly as part of another exhibition.

Incredibly, it was overseas appreciation of shunga that has prompted this first major show, such as the British Museum exhibition in 2013-14, which was visited by 88,000 people in three months!

Featuring around half the works seen at the London institution and drawing from the collection of former prime minister Morihiro Hosokawa, the Tokyo exhibition happening from September 19th to December 23rd at Tokyo’s Eisei Bunko Museum in Bunkyo-ku.

Getting a museum was the problem, it seems. The organizers wanted to hold the show in parallel with the London one but around 10 facilities turned them down! It’s a guaranteed blockbuster but museums-for-hire deemed it “immoral” or “distasteful”!

Naturally, you have to be at least 18 years old to get in to see the 120 works.

We always find it fascinating how the penis is exaggerated and enlarged in shunga — much like erotic manga today also features massive cocks and breasts, but still slender waist. This déformer style has very old roots in Japan.

While certain motifs and aspects are obviously exaggerated and reveal the “male gaze”, shunga do also tell us a lot about the history of sex in Japan and include depictions of old sex toys, and also tropes like “tentacle rape“.

Our lovely this week is the young and very up-and-coming Ikumi Hisamatsu.

Born in 1996, she’s still a teenager but has already taken the Gravure world by storm.

On a recent trip to Kyodo, a station in Setagaya, Tokyo, we were amused to see the Colonel Sanders outside the local KFC had been decorated in a black and red costume.

Naturally our first thoughts were: that’s a Tenga theme.

It suspiciously matches the color design for the Tenga SD Deep Throat Hard Cup toy.

I have no proof that KFC was indeed being cheeky here. It might be just some anime reference or a samurai armor costume.

La Belle (2000), also known as Mi in, stars Lee Ji-hyeon in a tale of an obsessive affair.

Born in 1978, Lee is naked in several very nice sex scenes.

A judge has made a ruling which should mean hostesses and hostess club mama-san’s (the older ladies who own and/or manage the club) can rest easy.

The wife of a CEO who spent around seven years having an affair with the mama of a Ginza hostess club sued her husband’s sexual partner for “mental suffering” she had caused. She wanted compensation of ¥4 million ($32,000).

The judge said that the Ginza mama-san was just doing makura eigyo (“pillow business”), the euphemism for when people have sex to further their career or do business. In other words, the Ginza hostess mama-san only had sexual relations with the man to retain him as a customer. (In fact, though, famously, hostess tend to lose their customers after they relent and have sex with them. The men often stopping having an interest in the “untouchable” hostess and paying crazy bills to drink with them once they have had what they desired.)

But the judge in the case ruled that the mama-san did not damage the “peace of marital life” and was “merely having sexual relations as a business, in the same way as prostitution”. While his comparison may be legally very curious — and we’d love to have heard the words come out of the judge’s mouth — it essentially means the wife has no legal grounds for her claim.

The ruling actually came in April last year but has only now been reported, for some reason.

The judge also helpfully pointed out that it is a public fact that there are people who do makura eigyo in order to retain their customers. Thanks for clearing that up. The difference in the value paid between prostitution and makura eigyo is simply one of whether it is direct or indirect.

The CEO and the mama-san would eat lunch once or twice a month on Saturdays, after which they would visit a love hotel for some “dessert”. In the evening they would go their separate ways. This continued from 2005 until 2012. During this period the man was also visiting the club at about the same rate so the judge declared it was “classic case of makura eigyo“, not adultery.

Actually, neither the wife nor the mama-san had brought up the argument of makura eigyo. She had denied there had been sexual relations entirely. The judge had come to the conclusion and used the argument in his ruling. Now that’s innovative legalese.

It’s not so different from the douhan system, where a host or hostess goes on a date with a client before taking them to the club for (expensive) drinks.

Kotaku reported on a Japanese morning TV segment showcasing boyfriend rental services.

Although the subject isn’t new, there were some interesting nuggets of information.

While there are much cheaper options out there, this service was expensive.

There’s “Fresh” for 5,000 yen ($40.22) an hour, “Regular” for 6,000 yen ($48.26) an hour, and “Special” for 7,000 yen ($56.31) an hour.

Most interestingly, there were some “statistics” about who uses boyfriend rental.

40% are housewives (40% of the users, that is, not 40% of housewives!) and with a return customer rate of 50%.

Sex isn’t on the menu here so these housewives just want some attention for 1-2 hours from a (young) man while they are stuck at home with their hardworking husband puts in his 15-hour office shift.

So they go for lunch together, go shopping together and even sing karaoke together…

This kind of thing can get expensive! As you can see here, the woman whose boyfriend rental date was featured on Hakunetsu Live Vivid, spent 39,000 yen ($313.71) for the six-hour rental fee.

Then, on top of that, there was an array of expenses:

- 1,030 yen ($8.29) on crepes
- 9,720 yen ($78.19) on shopping for accessories
- 4,089 yen ($32.89) on karaoke
- 14,590 yen ($117.36) on a meal
- 400 yen ($3.22) on sticker pictures at the arcade
- 200 yen ($1.61) on an arcade game

The total cost of the boyfriend-rental date was 69,029 yen ($555.27).

Cynics might say that this is all her husband’s money!

People are saying that gyaru are a dying breed. The fashion subculture is disappearing, with the magazines closing and the brands changing. Certainly we don’t see as much gyaru porn as we used to, which is a shame. Rumika, where are you?!

Of course, that doesn’t mean they can’t be cute.

Whole fashion lines have emerged to enhance the looks of flat-chested women, as well as some bras to make your breasts appear smaller.

Evidence even suggests that Japanese men prefer women with flat chests to the stereotypes of female beauty.

There is also a hinnyu (“poor breasts”) Gravure idol called Mana. Granted, she’s hardly in the top of her league but the fact that there are idols who trade on their hinnyu style is proof of something.

And now Mana, aka Manatei, wants to launch her own photo book and join the ranks of the mainstream. Her book is called “Manaita”, a pun on a Japanese slang word for “flat-chested”.

The book promises to be a “project supporting women with small breasts”.

The problem is she doesn’t have the backing of powerful publishers like her colleagues.

And so she has turned to crowd-funding to secure enough money to make the project happen.

In her “Manaita” book campaign she is offering a range of perks, including a copy of the book, merchandise, or even a date in Tokyo for a day with her (you have to contribute ¥100,000, or $800, to claim that one).

So fancy paying $800 for a date in Tokyo with a lady with a totally flat chest? Well, many gaijin enjoy that every weekend for free!

Her target is ¥1.5 million (around $12,000) by July 16th. At the time of writing she’s got 28 backers and is 23% of the way there. Good luck, Mana!

Such Gravure crowd-funding campaigns are far from unique. They can be a good way to test the waters before investing in the high costs of a photo book, especially if you are minor idol. Former AKB48 idol Anna Mori recently ran a successful crowd-funding campaign recently to get her first photo book off the ground.

What we find interesting about Manaita’s campaign is that it potentially shows real grassroots support for her flat-chested looks. We’ll be keeping an eye on the campaign to see how it progresses.
